Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the NABU Detectives and the SAPO Prosecutors have not slowed down in the fight against corruption. In the first half of 2020, the investigation of 406 criminal proceedings was started, 125 persons were given notices of suspicion, and 33 cases as of 50 persons were sent to court. This was stated by Artem Sytnyk, the NABU Director and Nazar Kholodnitskiy, the SAPO Head at the press briefing “Presentation of the Report on the NABU and SAPO results during the first half of 2020” on August 17, 2020.
The NABU Director noted that the economic impact of the work of NABU and SAPO in the first half of the year amounted to UAH 1.51 billion:
- UAH 687.73 was returned to State Enterprises;
- UAH 1.55 was returned by the Members of Parliament of Ukraine who received illegal cash compensation payments;
- UAH 753.66 million of public funds embezzlement was prevented.
“More than UAH 65 million was confiscated from suspects who violated the obligations imposed on them by the court decisions to the state budget. In my opinion, this is one of the reasons why there was a need to establish the High Anti-Corruption Court. Earlier, the facts of violations also happened, but it is the first time when the court reacted,” Artem Sytnyk stressed.
“The first year of the High Anti-Corruption Court work shows that society may see the results of our activities. The convictions is the best assessment of the effectiveness of NABU and SAPO,” Nazar Kholodnitskiy said.
In total, as of the end of June, 2020, NABU and SAPO investigate 986 criminal proceedings as of the facts of corruption offences that caused UAH 261.064 billion of damages. 390 persons are suspected of committing these crimes. 41 persons were found guilty.
